In-Play Cricket Trading: The Complete Strategy Guide
In-play trading is the heart of TipRun. Every ball is a price event. Every
phase of the match creates different opportunities.
The In-Play Advantage
Pre-match markets price in public information. By the time the match starts, that information is fully priced. In-play markets price in real-time information — and that’s where the real edges live. The dew that wasn’t forecast. The pitch that’s playing slower than expected. The batter who’s clearly in a different headspace.
The Three Phases
Phase 1: Powerplay (Overs 1–6)
Watch for: dominant partnerships forming, early wickets triggering overreaction, slow pitch signals. Trade when you see a clear mispricing vs the conditions.
Phase 2: Middle Overs (7–15)
The most undertraded phase. A set batter reaching 40 becomes a 70% probability. The market doesn’t always update fast enough. Dew arrives — chasing team’s probability should jump 5–8¢.
Phase 3: Death Overs (16–20)
Maximum volatility, maximum reward. Only trade if you have a specific read — a known big-hitter at the crease, a matchup you understand deeply.
Position Management During a Live Match
Set your exit target before you enter the position.
The pre-entry checklist:
- What’s my entry price?
- What’s my target exit price?
- What’s my stop — the price at which I accept I was wrong?
- How many contracts am I sizing?
If you can’t answer all four, don’t enter.
Reading Momentum Shifts
After a massive six that sends the market swinging 12¢, the rational response is often to fade the move if the underlying situation hasn’t structurally changed. One ball doesn’t alter a target of 28 off 18 as much as the market implies.
Price mean-reversion after momentum spikes is one of the most consistent patterns in prediction markets.
Second Innings: The Chase
Key variables:
- Required rate vs boundary frequency — 9.5 an over at Chinnaswamy is not the same as at Chepauk
- Wickets in hand — 48 off 24 with 8 wickets ≠ 48 off 24 with 4 wickets
- Batter matchups in the death — who’s at the crease for overs 17–20 matters enormously
